Nothing Fancy

Why Can’t I Just Throw It Away

July 22, 2016 By Mary 14 Comments

As I was getting ready for work the other morning, my husband, in a supportive and loving way — really it was — commented that maybe I could find room for one more bottle of shampoo in the shower.  I tossed an endearing gesture back at him and continued my morning rituals. It wasn’t until I was in the shower, looking at 6 bottles of shampoo and conditioner, that it hit me in the face… Read More

Deviled Eggs

In an emergency, boil eggs

July 20, 2016 By Mary 2 Comments

In any emergency, my mother boiled eggs.  She boiled eggs anytime she thought there might be visitors — for any reason, weddings, funerals, someone is in the hospital, or someone having a baby.  In fact, that was the 1st thing she did, even before calling people.  Put the eggs on to boil. My mom was used to feeding a crowd with very little notice.  I grew up in a family of 12 children, 8 older… Read More

Herb butters fresh and real!

July 20, 2016 By Mary 2 Comments

Fresh herbs, real butter…it doesn’t get much better.  Julia Child said, ” With enough butter, anything is good!”  Oh, so true.  Many people are afraid of butter, but it is natural and real, so moderation is the key!   That is why this is such a great trick — a little butter, some yumalicious herbs for extra flavor and you will be cooking like a pro and controlling the fat in your dish. Fresh herbs are… Read More

Easy Fresh Salsa / Pico De Gallo

July 19, 2016 By Mary 2 Comments

Nothing tastes as wonderful as fresh tomatoes from the garden and if I have some ripe tomatoes I try to incorporate them with almost every meal.   Tuesday night is taco night at our house and instead of the purchased salsa for our chips I made a quick and easy fresh salsa, that my husband called “magical”.  The “magic” ingredient is really just the  fresh garden tomatoes — you just can’t replicate that flavor. Here… Read More

I Think There is a Cat in the Furnace

July 15, 2016 By Mary 22 Comments

A  couple of months ago today, I was headed to the Erma Bombeck Writer’s Workshop, somewhere on I-74, listening to a Maeve Binchy book and dreaming of my new adventure.  That’s when it happened — I got the call.  My husband was calling, mid-afternoon — alarming anytime, but more so today.  Who died or what couldn’t he find — equally possible — and the dreaded thought — what can I do about it in the… Read More

Saving Summer in a Jar

June 9, 2016 By Mary Leave a Comment

Year after year, I pick all of my lovely herbs and try and dry them.  You will see in my pictures, I tried hanging them in my garage in pretty little bunches to dry and ended up with brown, ugly bunches.  I bought a dehydrator at a garage sale and it filled the house with an awful smell which I figured out was the plastic melting….ewwweee… So this year I vowed to find a better… Read More

Church Cookbook Classics: Purple Ribbon Cinnamon Bread

May 28, 2016 By Mary 3 Comments

In a desperate search for a 4-H food project for our county fair, my mother suggested I make my grandmother’s Cinnamon Bread recipe.  As a lazy teen, this seemed like a great idea — no trip to the store for special ingredients and it was easy to make.   Snap!  One less project to worry about for the fair.  No one was more surprised than me when the judges gave me a “Purple Grand Champion” ribbon!… Read More

Happy Little Pansies…

April 19, 2016 By Mary Leave a Comment

I LOVE pansies…happy little pansies… the flower was regarded as a symbol of remembrance. They are the first flowers I get to plant and they do great all summer long if you keep them in partial shade. They are also about the last to freeze at the end of the season – they love that cool fall weather… These pretty little things are kind of fool-proof and I should know — I’m kind of lazy and just… Read More

Rhubarb Crunch

Spring Means Rhubarb Season

April 16, 2016 By Mary Leave a Comment

It is spring in Iowa and nothing green will be appearing for several weeks, even so, I am already dreaming of rhubarb.  Rhubarb cake, rhubarb crisp, rhubarb jam, rhubarb pie, rhubarb wine all make up my version of sugar plum dreams. As a vintage cookbook collector, I spend hours pouring over cookbook pages, not only looking for  treasured recipes, but for fun.  Many are a greatly entertaining.  A couple of things I’ve noticed in my purusing… Read More
